Happy Birthday Clara Schumann

Clara Wieck Schumann [1819 – 1896] was a virtuoso pianist and a Romantic Era composer. Born Clara Wieck in Leipzig on September 13, 1819, she married another great virtuoso pianist and German Romantic composer, who she had a long love affair with, Robert Schumann on September 12, 1840.

Clara Wieck Schumann was one of the most recognized and popular female pianist in that era, who composed some great pieces for the piano; but when her husband, Robert Schumann, after feeling much pressure and failure [perceived in his own mind] had a mental breakdown and eventually had to go to an asylum, it led Clara to forgo, what could have been an even greater amount of composing great music so that she could take care of her beloved Robert. Clara would receive help and comfort form Clara and Robert’s great friend, pianist and composer, Johannes Brahms. After Robert Schumann’s tragic death, Brahms would continue to care for the woman he developed a love for, Clara Schumann.
