If I asked you, what is the first thing you think about when I mention the great patriotic “father” of Czech music, Bedrich Smetana? I think most of you, like me, would immediately say, Ah… Ma Vlast! – the great patriotic overture written in honor of his homeland.
While this is so beautiful, I was reminded when listening to Classical San Diego in the early morning of July 25th, 2024, Smetana is no “one hit wonder”, as they were playing this beautiful piano sonata by Bedrich Smetana in G minor. When I heard it, I could have tried to guess all night on who the composer was, and I would never have guessed it was Smetana. But it was and I was pleasantly surprised by this nice sonata.
The piano sonata was scored in the key of g minor with 4 movements: 1. sostenuto; 2. Adagio; 3. Scherzo-Vivace; and 4. Molto Vivace.
